Jon Watts Set to Direct the Next Star Wars Movie
The future of Star Wars is taking shape, and one of Hollywood’s most recognizable franchise directors is stepping into the galaxy far, far away once again. Jon Watts, best known for directing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, is attached to direct the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy being developed by Lucasfilm.
The upcoming trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, who has been developing the mysterious project since late 2024. The story is expected to continue the larger Skywalker Saga, potentially becoming the franchise’s long-awaited Episode X.
Watts already has a connection to the Star Wars universe. He previously co-created the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which premiered in 2024. His return suggests Lucasfilm is placing significant trust in his ability to combine large-scale franchise storytelling with character-driven entertainment.
One of the biggest questions surrounding the new trilogy is the return of Rey Skywalker, portrayed by Daisy Ridley in the sequel trilogy. According to current reports, Rey is expected to appear in some capacity, potentially connecting the new storyline with the previous nine episodes.
For Star Wars fans across the United States, the announcement creates plenty of questions: What will Episode X be about? Which characters will return? And how will Watts reshape the next era of the franchise?
